HOARD: How long have you been around as a musical duo? How did you find each other and start making music? MOMMY: We started making music a few days after we met in Philosophy class. I hit on him with the now-famous line, "So, did you get those tattoos in prison?" DADDY: That was in 1997. And after we consummated our relationship we formed a band. Not Mommy and Daddy, but a poor man's version of the same thing with more layers. Which ended up being really cheesy. HOARD: As the "leading New York electropunk power couple", can we assume that Mommy and Daddy are, um, romantically involved? Do Mommy and Daddy love each other? DADDY: If doin' it and living together means romantically involved, I'm stuck with her. We are in love, at least until the record comes out. HOARD: You're currently in the studio recording a new album for a Spring release. Can you tell us anything about the new album? Can you describe what the new album will sound like? What's the album going to be called? MOMMY: Well the EP will come first, which we are excited about. We recorded with Don Fury who is a NY punk and hardcore legend. That's in late February or early March, and it's self-titled with six songs. We love it because it has a ton of energy and captures our live show pretty well. DADDY: We're finishing the full-length record this week! It's a bit different since we've developed our sound. It's still super minimal with tons of energy! But we've added minute textural things like feedback samples and live drum loops as little bridges between parts. It's gonna be called "LIVE HOW YOU LISTEN" and it's on BIG CAT Records. HOARD: Who dishes out the discipline, Mommy or Daddy? DADDY: Can I answer that? MOMMY: No. HOARD: What inspires you Mommy? MOMMY: New York City! Women who make music inspire me, too. HOARD: What inspires you Daddy? DADDY: Memories of old hardcore shows. Knowing that I might die today. And Mommy's juicy booty. HOARD: What do you like most about performing music live? MOMMY: I hate sweating; we dance a lot. But I love watching people shout along with the lyrics they know! We try to write words that are easy to remember, that's not just for Daddy's benefit, either. DADDY: I like sweating. I find it cleansing, and I also like to whip the sweat at Mommy with my dance moves. She hates that! HOARD: Have you had any shows in San Francisco? Do you have plans to play in San Francisco anytime soon? MOMMY: Yes yes YES! We have major plans to tour the West coast; we just need to book the dates. I'm guessing sometime this summer. DADDY: We are both psyched to play the West coast in general because people have a tendency to move it a little more than the East coast people, who have to wait for the person next to them to start shaking it. I've always admired that about the left coast! HOARD: How did you come to call yourselves Mommy and Daddy? MOMMY: It came from talking to our cat. "Don't bother us, Mommy and Daddy are practicing!" We recently spent 2000 bucks on her courtesy of Visa to save her from a kidney stone-induced death. She is alive and meowing. HOARD: Mommy, where did you grow up? MOMMY: Northern Virginia suburbs! HOARD: And where did Daddy grow up? DADDY: Brooklyn, NY. HOARD: Do either one of you want to share what your educational background might be? Advanced degree? Beauty school drop-out? DADDY: I'm a high school drop out who went back for a bachelor's degree in philosophy. Which is basically the same thing. MOMMY: I have a degree in government and international studies with a minor in Asian Pacific studies. Yeah, I'm using that a lot these days. I speak Chinese, though. That's one good thing that came out of college. HOARD: Mommy, do you bake cookies? MOMMY: Not really, but once I went on a pie baking spree where I made 10 pies in a week. We couldn't eat them all. HOARD: What's your opinion of the current state of the Nation? DADDY: We have a song called "ALL TIME," and the first line is: "Wake up 'cause this world's on fire / I want, I want, I want, I want to retire." That sums it up. HOARD: Thank you very much. I certainly hope that you come and visit San Francisco real soon! MOMMY & DADDY: We can't wait! Thanks! [END] ----- For more information about Mommy and Daddy: www.mommyanddaddy.com -----
