STEVEN BARICH "My work to date has been reflective of either current events or current study, and how I filter this information. I am open to influences from my immediate surroundings, both inside the studio and out. The sculptures I am making are creations from simple ideas and simple material and forms. This is the context in which to approach them. I am thinking of what makes me scared, makes me laugh, or makes me sad. In drawing and painting, I have developed a personal lexicon of characters that appear as recurring motifs in the work. These characters have been developed to represent states of being, visually. Animal figures personify human physical and emotional characteristics. In some cases, the characters seem ambivalent to their surroundings, suggesting what is taking place is a multi-layered experience, dreams or events that have taken place in the past. In other cases, the characters interact with their surroundings and each other, giving the sense that the event is taking place before your eyes. The sources of my imagery are personal photographs; postcards and photographs from news stand magazines" |
